As I understand it one of the goals of a humble person should be to strive to understand the world he/she lives in and then determine how he fits into it. A humble person knows that he is not better than those around him, and thus has gained insight into his own limitations. In truth it is possible for the most powerful ruler to be humble, whereas even a penniless shepherd can be cut down by his own pride. To guard against the daemon of one's own pride, the humble soul is burdened with the following tasks:
To enter into a never-ending observation of the world he/she lives in to gain an understanding into the people, places and history of that world. This task is never-ending because a humble soul will understand that his/her picture of the world as an individual will never be completely accurate. To observe oneself, and try to see him/her in the light of the understanding gained from observing others. Only by examining the view others see of oneself can one get an accurate view of his/her own limitations. The decision over whether or not one likes what one sees will vary from person to person, but at least now he should be able to make less selfish decisions on how to change if the picture is bad. To share and offer up for criticism the important insights gained from his/her observations with others. This task should be tempered with the knowledge that all of his observations could be inaccurate, or unconsciously biased. Care should be taken to ensure that the information is presented in a neutral light, and any opinions as being open to criticism. To help and assist those souls which have been destroyed by pride.
Now I have tried in my life to follow the tasks above as best I can but I know that my path may not be the best. Still I offer up the following path for those heralds who wish to study under the Virtue of Humility. The path and the titles along the way are open to criticism and will no doubt change as others grant their insight, but in order to provide some structure here is the draft:
First a herald should study under all the virtues. The path of humility is not for everyone, but even for those who wish to dedicate themselves to it, it is essential that they understand all the virtues and how humility fits in with respect to them.
The next stage in the path of humility is a grand one indeed. Heralds who wish to devote themselves to humility will be indoctrinated as "Heroes". Their task will be to go out and have as many adventures as they can, seeing exotic cities, journeying to far off destinations, participating in battles or great contests. They should try to ever be observant of those they meet, and try to remember all that occurs, but the goal here is to see, read and participate in as many events as possible to gain an understanding into the people, places, history and culture of our shard.
After some time as one of the shard's great heroes, a follower of humility will realize that apart from merely observing and participating, he is beginning to understand some the events and people he/she interacts with. When the hero is confident in this understanding, he can, by his own choice, move on to the second stage on the path of humility and become a "Scholar". This is a difficult task, and will likely require a lot of solitary thinking and meditating. It may be helpful to try and talk to strangers and see how they react. Scholars will move on to the next stage by understanding their own limitations. The test to pass on to the next stage will be to write down what the scholar thinks his/her limitations are as seen by others. Then a shepherd or the sage of humility will contact the scholar's companions and ask them what they think his/her limitations are. This way if a scholar is being too harsh on his/herself or has missed something, the shepherd or sage will know and the scholar will have to try again.
The next stage on the path of humility is to become a "Monk". The job of a monk is to share the insights and knowledge he/she has gained with others who wish to listen. This can be done in several different ways. Perhaps told as stories in a crowded room. Or perhaps in a book or history to be read by those who truly are interested. The focus of the information being shared should never be the elevation of the monk imparting the wisdom, but the wisdom itself. As such it may be useful to submit the information anonymously. In other cases where an opinion or idea is being shared, however, anonymity may destroy any chance the reader has to refute or criticize, so care should be taken. Passing onto the final stage, will most likely require a unanimous vote of the fellow monks, but may also in rare occasions be granted by shepherds or the sage (for instance if there are no fellow monks).
The final stage in the path of humility is to become a "Shepherd". The job of a shepherd is to help those that have had their lives ruined by pride. The broader goal is to fight against pride in all its forms, but often a follower of pride does not even realize his/her chosen path so there is no hope of turning them until after a catastrophe has occurred.
I do not wish for the previous outline to be construed as a rigid description of positions and tasks. It is merely a path that will hopefully lead the traveler to a life of humility. Also it is important to note that each stage imparts more tasks on the follower - so a shepherd still tries to observe the world around him/her and gain understanding into his/herself.
